Why parents of children with disabilities need life insurance

Because your child’s care may not stop at age 18.

Many children with disabilities need support well into adulthood, and some for their whole lives. If you weren’t here, someone would need the money to keep providing it. They may need help with:

  • Daily living support
  • Therapy & medical care
  • Transportation
  • Housing
  • Special education support
  • Caregiver expenses
  • Food, clothing & basic needs
  • Long-term supervision
  • Future financial stability

A life insurance policy can help make sure there is money available for the people you trust to continue caring for your child.

Your coverage options

Two ways to protect your child’s future

Term life covers the years your family needs it most. Permanent life stays in place for good. Many families use one, and some combine both.

How long each option can protect your family

Example: a policy started when your child is 5

Illustration only. Term coverage runs for a set number of years from the date the policy starts. Permanent coverage is designed to last for the insured’s lifetime as long as required premiums are paid.

Term Life Policies

10, 20, or 30 years

Affordable coverage for 10, 20, or 30 years.

This can help protect your family during the most important years: while your child is growing, while you have a mortgage, or while your household depends on your income.

  • The most coverage for the lowest cost
  • Level premiums that stay the same for the term
  • Option to convert to permanent coverage later may be available

Whole Life, IUL & Cash Value

Permanent, lifelong coverage

Permanent protection that can stay in place for life.

These policies may also build cash value over time, which can become part of a larger financial plan for your family.

Whole LifeIndexed Universal Life (IUL)Universal Life
  • Coverage designed to last your whole life
  • Cash value that can grow over time
  • Some families pair it with a Special Needs Trust or ABLE account to plan for long-term care needs

Plan the payout

Where the money goes matters as much as how much.

Many people with disabilities rely on SSI and Medicaid, which have strict asset limits. Setting up your policy the right way keeps the money working for your child.

The route many families choose

  1. Your life insurance policy
  2. Special Needs TrustManaged by a trustee you choose
  3. Your child’s careSSI and Medicaid eligibility generally protected

The route to think twice about

  1. Your life insurance policy
  2. Paid directly to your childCan count against SSI and Medicaid asset limits

Special Needs Trust

Let someone you trust manage the money

A third-party special needs trust can be named as your policy’s beneficiary. The trustee uses the funds for your child’s care and quality of life, generally without affecting their eligibility for benefits.

ABLE account

Tax-advantaged savings, now open to more people

ABLE accounts let people with disabilities save without losing benefits. As of January 1, 2026, eligibility covers anyone whose disability began before age 46, up from 26.

46New age-of-onset limit
$100KExcluded from SSI resource limits
$20K2026 annual contribution limit

We’re licensed insurance professionals, not attorneys. A special needs planning attorney can set up a trust, and your coverage can be arranged to fit that plan. Medicaid payback rules for ABLE accounts vary by state.

Book a Consultation
Do I really not need a medical exam?

Many of the policies we offer use a short health questionnaire instead of a medical exam. Whether an exam is needed depends on the carrier, the plan, your age, and the amount of coverage. We’ll tell you up front.

I have a pre-existing condition. Can I still qualify?

Often, yes. Many pre-existing conditions may qualify, and each carrier looks at health history differently. Because we’re independent and work with 80+ A-rated carriers, we can look for the ones most likely to approve you at a fair rate.

Can I get coverage on my child or grandchild?

Plans are available for children and grandchildren, as well as parents and spouses. Whether a particular child qualifies depends on the carrier and the child’s health history. We’ll check which options are open to your family.

Who should I name as the beneficiary?

Many parents of a child with a disability name a third-party Special Needs Trust instead of the child, so the money can pay for their care without putting SSI or Medicaid eligibility at risk. A special needs planning attorney can set up the trust, and your policy can be arranged to pay into it.

Should I choose term or permanent coverage?

It depends on your budget and how long your child may need support. Term gives the most coverage for the lowest cost over 10, 20, or 30 years. Permanent coverage lasts for life and can build cash value. Many families use both. Try the three quick questions above, then talk it through with us.

How much coverage do I need?

Start with what your child’s care could cost each year and how many years support may be needed, then subtract what other resources will cover. Coverage options go up to $1 million and more, and we’ll work through the numbers with you during your consultation.

What does “rates can be locked in” mean?

With level-premium term and whole life policies, your premium is set when the policy is issued and stays the same for the guaranteed period. Applying sooner, while you’re younger and healthier, usually means a lower locked-in rate.

Does the consultation cost anything?

No. The consultation is free and there’s no obligation. Its purpose is to help you understand your options so you can make the decision that’s right for your family.

Your child depends on your love every day.

Life insurance helps make sure your plan does not depend on you being here forever.
